Boot Windows XP from a USB flash drive

You cant boot Windows XP from a floppy disk the way you used to be able to with DOS. One handy way to easily boot XP is by using a USB flash drive. Heres how to make it work. Almost everyone who has worked with computers for any length of time at all has run into at least one situation in which a problem left a PC unbootable. What if you could return the machine to a bootable state just by inserting a USB flash drive though? Believe it or not, it is actually possible to install a bootable copy of Windows XP onto a flash drive and then boot a PC off of the flash drive. From there, you can use applications that you have installed on the flash drive (anti virus, anti spyware, disk repair, etc.) to fix the PCs problem. In this article, I will show you how.

As with most cool new techniques, there are a few catches. For starters, not every PC is capable of booting from a USB flash drive. For the most part, computers manufactured within the last two years are generally able to boot from a flash drive. Older systems may require a BIOS update, or might not be able to boot from a flash drive at all.

Another catch is that not every flash drive will get the job done. The primary factors that limit your use of a particular flash drive are capacity and speed. Technically, speed isnt really a limiting factor, but booting Windows will be painfully slow unless you use a flash drive that supports USB 2.0.

The flash drives capacity is actually a limiting factor though. Surprisingly though, there are size limits on both the upper and lower end. Your flash drive cant be too large or too small. There isnt really a documented minimal size for a flash drive. You just need something large enough to hold Windows XP and a few applications. As you probably know, Windows XP normally consumes over a gigabyte of disk space. Later I will show you how to use a free utility to trim the excess fat off of Windows XP and make it a whole lot smaller. Even so, I still recommend that your flash drive be at least a minimum of 256 MB in size.

Remote Desktop App TeamViewer Touch Comes To Windows 8

Remote desktop applications are a great way to diagnose and solve problems on other computers over the internet. Remote access can be of multiple types; some connections allow you to just view the desktop screen, and whatever is happening on it, while others equip you with the ability to control almost all the aspects of a remote computer, letting you access different software, open menus, and perform actions as if you’re physically present in front of it. People who frequently have to deal with complex computer issues can benefit from such solutions by providing remote access to someone who knows how to fix such problems. One of the most famous remote desktop solutions out there is TeamViewer, which is currently available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Using TeamViewer, you can remotely control your computer from any Teamviewer-configured system. How to Speed Up Windows 7 Folder Loading Time

Many people complain that folders take a lot of time to load in Windows 7 (sometimes even more than 10 seconds), especially when the folder size is huge. Now, the question here is, is Windows 7 slow or is it the way you maintain your computer? There is no solid answer to this.

However, there are ways to speed up the loading of folders. We have compiled a list of activities that (if performed) may help in improving the speed. These processes are not foolproof, but yes, they have shown improvements and positive results. So, go ahead and try your luck.

Optimize Folders for Contents

Windows generally optimizes a folder based on the contents in it. However, when the optimization is stated as Documents or General, I have noticed that the time taken to load a folder is comparatively lower. To do that follow these steps:-
Step 1: Right-click on the folder in question and choose to launch its Properties.

Step 2: On the Loading Properties window, navigate to Customize tab. Then, check General Items or Documents from the drop down and apply the setting to sub-folders as well.

Rebuild the Index

The indexing of files and folders can get messy over time with the addition and deletion of data. Though Windows manages the change, it could be a good idea to manually rebuild the index when loading of contents is slow. Here’s how to do that.
Step 1: Click on Start menu and type index. Select Indexing Options from the list that appears.

Step 2: That will open the Indexing Options window. Click on Advanced and enter the administrator password if prompted to do so.

Step 3: In the Advanced Options dialog box, click the Index Settings tab, and then click Rebuild.

Note: Indexing may take long time to complete. Some views and search results may be incomplete till then.

Organizing Files and Folders

Generally organizing files in a directory and sub-directory structure helps in better optimization and indexing. As a computer user it is a thumb rule to better maintenance.
There could be chances that the folders which are loading slowly have shortcuts to some other locations that do not exist anymore or point to invalid path. So, carefully check and confirm that there is nothing of that sort. Else, Windows wastes time in looking for those invalid paths.

Handling Thumbnail Cache

When you have the thumbnail view activated Windows may take time in loading the thumbnail of files and folders. Generally, thumbnails are cached for faster loading but the activity of rebuilding these pictures on change of content makes things bad.
Now, you can avoid the thumbnails and the associated time by ensuring that Windows shows icons only and never thumbnails.

Cool Tip: Read our article on Thumbs.db files in Windows to learn more about these thumbnails and the process of viewing icons only.
Besides, you can always change the folder view to List or Details rather than keeping the iconic view. That again helps by reducing the time to load thumbnail pictures.

Conclusion

I have stated these things from experience. They have worked a number of times for me and my friends. There is nothing special about these activities; however, there is no harm in trying them. They may help you get rid of the green bar that keeps floating for minutes.
Tell us if it helps. If you are aware of more methods to do so, let us know.

The Windows 8 start screen is probably one of the most important feature and there are many other features linked to it. One of the feature is the ability to uninstall metro apps easily from the start screen. Metro apps are the ones which are installed from Windows Store. But if your PC is used by other users, you might probably want to prevent others from uninstalling apps you have installed on your Windows 8. Although there is an option to prevent this using Group policy, this option is not available in all versions of Windows 8.

So in such cases, it is best to prevent uninstalling using the registry hack. Please note that, this trick involves editing the registry of Windows, do not attempt it if you are not sure on modifying registry. Also, take a backupof registry before editing it.

Open the registry using the Run command (Win + R) and type regedit and press enter. Now navigate to this key,HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows

In the next step, you need to create a new Key Explorer under the Windows.

Now select this new key and create a new DWORD value NoUninstallFromStart under the Explorer key.

Get Weather Updates By The Minute With SkyMotion For Windows Phone

Get Weather Updates By The Minute With SkyMotion For Windows Phone:
Live tiles are the flagship feature of Microsoft’s latest operating systems and while they are handy in displaying info at a quick glance for a lot of different types of apps, they particularly shine when it comes to weather apps. Microsoft’s own weather app has a rather simple live tile, but there are many fancier options available in the Windows Phone Store that utilize live tiles to the max. Usually live tiles get updated after an hour or so, which is fine in most cases. However, if the weather of your city is really unpredictable and has the tendency to go from sunny to stormy in a matter of minutes, even live tiles can’t do enough to forewarn you. That’s where SkyMotion can be of assistance. This new Windows Phone app provides minute-by-minute weather updates, and can tell you about a coming onslaught of the elements that might slip under the radar of an ordinary weather app.

SkyMotion WP Options SkyMotion WP Location SkyMotion WP Settings
SkyMotion is based upon such a great concept that a lot of Windows Phone users are gonna love to have it on their devices right away. Unfortunately though, the app only supports locations from US and Canada for now, and while you can install and use it anywhere, you will not get any weather data for locations outside the US and Canada. If you are living in one of the supported locations though, SkyMotion is one of the must-have apps. It automatically locates you on the map and shows the conditions of your area under the ‘My Current Position’ heading. Other locations can be bookmarked by hitting the ‘+’ button and searching for the desired place.
To personalize SkyMotion, head to the Settings menu, where you get to change the temperature unit, refresh time and live tile settings. It is possible to pin individual locations to the Start screen directly as well, allowing you quick access to them in the app rather than having to navigate to them after launching the app.
SkyMotion WP Summary SkyMotion WP Forecast
The weather reports presented by SkyMotion are termed ‘nowcast’. The summary page of the nowcast has a nice graphical and text representation of the weather conditions, along with the current temperature. You also get to see the estimated time till the next change in the conditions is expected. The tiny ‘Next Forecast In’ timer counts down to the time remaining till the nowcast gets refreshed. In order to view the weather forecast in the thorough SkyMotion style, swipe rightwards to the ‘details’ section that lists the expected upcoming changes in conditions.
To get the most out of SkyMotion, you must use its live tile since that increases the app’s usefulness by a long way. SkyMotion supports all the cities in North America, and works on Mango as well as Windows Phone 8. You can grab the app for free from Windows Phone Store using the link below.
