With the advent of social media, RSS feeds have become significantly less relevant for the masses, but we’ve been seeing several smartphone apps and web services that have proved them to be still useful for a lot of us. Google Reader has become very user-friendly, and apps like Flipboard offer great RSS support as well. Skimn is the latest player to enter this arena. Designed for the iPad, this app lets users build their RSS feed collection from scratch, and offers some neat options to manage it. There is no need to manually subscribe to a feed by looking for the RSS button on its website; you can instead discover feeds by searching for a particular website or topic, right from the app itself. To help keep things manageable, you can easily create categories, and move feeds to any position in the list. Skimn supports gestures, has a night mode and facilitates users in keeping pace with all the latest news stories in the minimum possible time.



Skimn starts with a tutorial but even if you choose to skip it, the app allows you to bringing it up at a later time. To add a new feed to the app, hit the ‘+’ button located in the bottom-left corner. The same button also houses the option to add new categories to your feed list. Performing a search for the name of the desired website or a keyword related to a generic topic brings up several results. Don’t try putting a full URL in the search box though, as this isn’t likely to return any suitable results. Multiple feeds can be added from the search results simply by hitting the ‘+’ button next to each.
Once you have added a sufficient number of feeds to Skimn, you can arrange them into categories by long-pressing any feed’s name and then dragging it to a new position. To remove a feed or category from your Skimn list, simply swipe across it. By default, the most recent article of the selected feed is shown on the main screen. You can read the item in detail, watch any media embedded in it, and open any contained links in Safari.
To view older posts belonging to a particular feed, swipe from right to left or hit the button in the top-right corner of the opened post. If you want to switch to night mode, tap the ‘Aa’ icon and use the sun/moon buttons to change the background theme. Skimn also allows users to change the text size of posts, and there is a slider available for that purpose. The share button lets you publish an article on Facebook and Twitter. You can also open the post in Safari via this menu.
You don’t need to sign up for an account in order to use Skimn, which means there is no way of backing up your collection to the cloud. Also, you cannot import feeds from any external source, so Skimn is only useful if you just want a way of browsing through the latest news stories on your iPad in a clutter-free and easily manageable environment. Since Cleverbug is all about Facebook friends, it makes sense that users have to link their Facebook ID with the app before they can create any cards. How to Control Your Mac with Hand Claps:
Are there times or situations when you find it hard to control your Mac? Wouldn’t it be easier if you could control your Mac, such as opening iTunes, just by clapping your hands? Well luckily you can with iClapper.
iClapper is a semi-free Mac app that recognizes your hand clapping commands by analysing the sound input of your Mac’s microphone. As the website states, you can assign any action to a certain number of recognized claps, as well as to a combination of claps. The app is free, but there is also a Pro version that supports custom Applescripts.

Getting Started

1. Download iClapper from the Mac App Store and open it up on your computer.
2. You’ll be able to watch a short introductory video and go through a quick calibration process, which involves a series of single claps that you’ll have to do – so make sure you’re in a quiet room/location.
3. Once you’re done with the calibration, you’ll be able to add presets and rules under the Actions tab in Preferences.

Actions

1. The Preferences window should already be open on your computer, if not you can select it from iClapper’s menu bar icon. Under the Actions tab in Preferences, you can create various presets and you can use different rules for each one.

For instance, you can have a set of rules for at home and a different set of rules for when you’re at work.
2. As stated above, you can create a set of rules for each of your presets. Your rules will contain a command, action, and optional confirmation message.
3. To create a rule, click on the plus sign at the bottom of “Rules” and then customize the command and action as you’d like.

4. For commands you can choose a certain number of claps or combinations of claps. If you choose a certain number of claps, you can choose how many claps to use (2 to 5).

If you choose combination then you can choose how many claps to have in your first set and how many to have in the second set (1 to 5 per set). You’ll need to put a noticeable break between each set of claps for iClapper to recognize it.
5. For actions, you can choose to have your Mac say something such as the time or date. You can also choose to run or play iTunes, check your email, or play/pause QuickTime. If you want even more actions, you’ll have to pay for them.
6. If you want a confirmation message to pop-up before an action is performed, you can enable it on a rule-by-rule basis. This is especially useful if you choose to have iClapper put your computer to sleep or shut it down.

You can purchase individual sets of actions for $0.99 each, or you can get all current and future available actions packs for just $3.99 (the better deal).
7. If you want to remove a rule, just click on the minus button at the bottom (next to the plus button).

Other Features

1. You can have iClapper notify you about clap recognition, performed actions, and confirmations; it even supports Growl if you’re still using it on your Mac. You can customize them under the Notifications tab in the Preferences window.

2. You can select the input device that you want iClapper to use. For instance, you may have a built-in microphone and external microphone on your Mac, but you want iClapper to listen for claps on the extrenal microphone. In this case, you can set iClapper to use the external microphone under the Input Device tab in the Preferences window.
3. From the iClapper menu bar icon, you can stop iClapper when you want it to stop listening for claps, and then start it again when you’re ready.

Today, we present to you an app for Windows 8 called Smart Music that does the same for Microsoft’s latest desktop and tablet OS. It features readymade playlists for different types of moods, and provides you with a built-in player to stream the songs directly to your Windows 8 device.


The main interface of the application has songs grouped into different mood categories such as Happy, Sad, Crazy, In Love, and Sleepy. Click a song to go to the built-in player and start streaming it.

At the top right corner, you’re bound to notice the “I’m feeling … click here to let me know” text; just click ‘here’ to choose a mood you are in. Other than the mood, you can also specify the current weather from Sunny Day, Rainy All, Cloudy and Snowy, and the current time of the day from Morning, Afternoon and Evening.

The app is really good at what it does; however, it needs a bit of polishing to make it more usable by ironing the quirks out. For instance you have to keep the app maximized in order to listen to music; if you minimize it, or even pin it to the side, the music stops playing. Moreover, you cannot search for a particular song or artist. Adding these features, specially the ability to keep the song playing in the background would definitely make the app stand out.
