Apple’s own Cards service and Ink Cards for iOS and Android provide an excellent way to let your friends and family know you’re thinking of them without having to leave your house to buy or mail post cards. These apps let you design and send real-life greeting cards to your contacts, all from your mobile device. Recently, some other developers have started venturing into this genre of apps, Cleverbug for iOS being the hottest new entrant. The app’s main focus is birthday cards, and it doubles as a reminder app for upcoming birthdays of your Facebook friends. The thing that makes Cleverbug stand out from among other similar apps is its ability to automatically incorporate photos of your friends into the cards you are making for them. It is also possible to put pictures into templates manually, and of course, to enter personalized text into cards before you place an order for their printing and postage.
Since Cleverbug is all about Facebook friends, it makes sense that users have to link their Facebook ID with the app before they can create any cards. If you wan to be able to send cards to your friends discreetly, request them to share their postal address with you well before their birthday. The ‘Invite Friends’ option in the Cleverbug menu is useful if you want to stay in touch with other friends using the app. The main screen of Cleverbug lists all your Facebook friends according to their birthdays. The age of everyone who has kept his or her year of birth public is displayed over their DP.
To start making a birthday card for a particular contact, simply search for them on the main page and hit the arrow button next to their name. Facebook Testing Paid Messaging Option for Potentially Unwanted Email
Facebook users are a weird bunch. There are two kinds of users when it comes to privacy: those who absolutely want their activity to be held completely secret, and those who have no idea what they’re doing with the service. The latter will sometimes write personal messages to people in the comments section of someone’s status update. But if a new test is deemed successful, Facebook users can throw a good chunk of their privacy out the window as Facebook is testing a new feature that would allow people outside of your network to contact you directly through the service.
As it is right now before any changes are made, if a user receives a message from one of their friends or friends of friends, depending on your privacy settings, it will go directly to your inbox. Users who don’t share any mutual friends with you but want to contact you anyway, will have their message sent to your “Other” folder. The majority of Facebook probably aren’t even aware such a folder exists. The test Facebook will be running will allow users to contact people they don’t share any mutual friends with, pretty much strangers, for a small charge of $1 per message. The charge will ensure their message is sent to the person’s inbox, rather than their “Other” folder.
This move could potentially increase spam throughout the service. It seems there will be a minority of users who will use this test to send you messages about male enhancement drugs that don’t work, or to help their son or daughter win a popularity contest on some website. I assume Facebook has taken the proper measures for spammers not to run rampant with this test. But seeing how bad of a job it has been doing lately with user privacy, upsetting many users with its recent change to Instagram terms of service, I can’t help but think this is a terrible idea.

At the beginning of this month, Facebook Messenger’s Android and iOS clients got updated with voice messaging. The Android app for Facebook received the same feature a few days later, and now the iOS variant has also been updated to let you attach audio recordings with your messages. The latest update adds some other changes to the mix as well; you can finally record and share videos without having to leave the app. There is no apparent change in the photo sharing menu, but once you initiate the camera, you now get the option to switch between image and video capture. The Nearby tab has been revamped, and you get to apply a variety of filters while performing a search in nearby locations. It is even possible to look for interesting places only in a particular area of the map.
Voice messages can be sent to any Facebook user, regardless of the platform they are on. These recordings are playable on web, but you have to be on iOS or Android to send one. Hit the ‘+’ button next to the text box in any message thread, and you will notice the new ‘Record Voice’ option. Tap and hold the red button to record any sound. If you slide your finger off the button, the recording is cancelled, while simply releasing it sends the audio clip automatically. To listen to recordings you receive, simply tap the message once.
To get a taste of the new video recording feature, go to your profile page and tap the ‘Share Photo’ button. Once the camera is launched, you are sure to notice the small image/video toggle in the bottom-right corner. It is also possible to load videos that are already in the camera roll.
Other major changes have taken place in the ‘Nearby’ tab of the app. Each place in the list shows the names of your friends who have visited it, its distance from you and overall ratings from users. In addition to the places filters and ‘Search this Area’ buttons, the map now also shows photos of your friends who are currently near you, or have checked-in to nearby places in the past.
Although it is not mentioned anywhere in the changelog, we found a new icon (three vertically placed dots) next to all the posts on the main feeds page. This button brings up the option to hide any post or mark it as spam. As always, the Facebook app is available for free and plays nice with all iOS devices. You can get the app’s latest version via the ‘Updates’ section of the App Store, while new users can download it by clicking the following link.
